Mercado Central de Lima has been the commercial heart of the historic center since the 19th century. Situated at the edge of Lima's Chinatown (Barrio Chino), it offers everything from tropical fruits and Andean grains to Chinese-Peruvian chifa ingredients.
A central market has operated on or near this site since Lima's founding in 1535. The current building dates from the mid-20th century. Chinese immigration to Peru, beginning in the 1850s, created the adjacent Barrio Chino, which is now the oldest Chinatown in Latin America.
