Overview
Sassoon Docks is Mumbai's oldest and largest fishing dock, dating from 1875. At dawn, the docks erupt into a chaotic, colourful spectacle as fisherwomen sort the night's catch from hundreds of trawlers — one of Mumbai's most raw and authentic experiences.
Highlights
- Dawn Catch: Between 5–7 AM, the docks are a sensory overload of fish, colour, shouts, and activity as the night's haul is sorted and auctioned.
- Koli Fisherwomen: The Koli women who dominate the trade are one of Mumbai's oldest communities, predating the city itself.
- Art District: The Sassoon Dock Art Project (annual) transforms the waterfront into an open-air contemporary art exhibition.
History
Built in 1875 by David Sassoon, a Baghdadi Jewish merchant, the docks were the first wet dock in western India. The Koli fishing community has worked these waters for over 500 years.
