Overview
The Basílica de San Juan de Dios is one of Spain's most sumptuously decorated Baroque churches, built to honour Saint John of God, who founded his hospitaller order in Granada in 1539.
Highlights
- Gold Interior: Every surface of the nave — walls, ceiling, altarpieces — is covered in ornate gilded woodwork, creating an overwhelming visual impact.
- Camarín: Behind the main altar, a small octagonal chamber holds the saint's relics in a gilded silver urn.
- Frescoes: The ceiling frescoes by Diego Sánchez Sarabia depict scenes from the saint's life.
History
Designed by José de Bada and built between 1737 and 1759, the basilica replaced an earlier church. The Baroque excess was deliberate: the order wanted to glorify their founder with maximum visual splendour.
