Overview
Sri Mahamariamman Temple is KL's oldest Hindu temple, founded in 1873 by Tamil immigrants and relocated to its current site on Jalan Tun H.S. Lee in 1885. Its towering gopuram (gateway tower), added in 1972, is covered with 228 Hindu deities sculpted in vivid colours.
Highlights
- Raja Gopuram: The 23-metre entrance tower adorned with hundreds of painted stucco figures depicting Hindu mythology.
- Silver chariot: A 300 kg silver chariot used during the annual Thaipusam procession to Batu Caves.
- Interior shrines: Richly decorated sanctums dedicated to Mahamariamman, Ganesha, and Murugan.
History
Founded by K. Thamboosamy Pillai for private family worship, the temple was opened to the public in 1920. It is the starting point of the annual Thaipusam procession to Batu Caves.
Visitor Tips
- Shoes off: Remove footwear before entering (lockers available).
- Photography: Permitted in the outer courtyard but restricted inside the inner sanctum.
- Duration: 20–30 minutes.
