Overview
The Metropolitan Cathedral is the largest and oldest cathedral in the Americas, built between 1573 and 1813 on the site of an Aztec temple. Its facade blends Baroque, Neoclassical, and Churrigueresque styles.

- Altar de los Reyes: The gilded Churrigueresque altarpiece at the rear, one of New Spain's finest.
- Sagrario parish church: The adjoining ultra-Baroque parish building with an elaborately carved facade.

History
Hernán Cortés laid the first stone in 1573 using materials from the destroyed Aztec Templo Mayor. Sixteen different architects contributed over 240 years.
