Dómkirkjan (Reykjavík Cathedral) is a charming pink-and-white neoclassical church overlooking Austurvöllur square. Despite its modest size, it is the seat of the Bishop of Iceland and the mother church of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Iceland.
The current cathedral was built between 1788 and 1796, designed by architect Andreas Kirkerup. It replaced an older church and was the site of the first session of the re-established Alþingi in 1845. Iceland's declaration of independence was ratified nearby in 1944.
