Overview
The Hakone Ropeway is a 4-kilometer aerial gondola system connecting Sounzan to Togendai via the volcanic valley of Owakudani. It is one of the longest aerial tramways in Japan and offers extraordinary views of volcanic steam vents, Lake Ashi, and Mount Fuji.
Highlights
- Owakudani Overflight: The gondolas pass directly over the steaming, sulfurous volcanic valley — a thrilling aerial perspective of the active geology.
- Fuji Panorama: On clear days, Mount Fuji fills the western horizon as the gondola descends toward Lake Ashi.
- Seasonal Colors: Autumn foliage carpeting the mountainsides below the gondola creates a spectacular color mosaic.
History
Originally opened in 1959, the ropeway has been modernized several times. After a period of closure due to increased volcanic activity in 2015, it reopened fully in 2016 with reinforced gondolas designed to better withstand volcanic gases.
Visitor Tips
- Hakone Free Pass: The ropeway is included in the Hakone Free Pass, making it part of the classic loop route.
- Clear Mornings: Fuji views are best in morning before clouds build up.
- Duration: 30 minutes one-way, plus time at Owakudani.
