Overview
Kościuszko Mound is one of Kraków's four ceremonial mounds, built in 1823 to honour independence hero Tadeusz Kościuszko. The 34-metre hill offers 360° views and contains soil from battlefields of the American and Polish wars of independence.
Highlights
- Panoramic views: The summit offers the broadest view of Kraków and the Tatras on clear days.
- Historic soil: Earth from every battlefield where Kościuszko fought, including Saratoga (USA) and Racławice (Poland).
- Fortress museum: The surrounding 19th-century Austrian fortress has a small military history exhibition.
History
Built by public subscription in 1820–1823, the mound follows a Slavic tradition of ceremonial burial mounds. Kościuszko (1746–1817) was a hero of both the American and Polish revolutions.
