Overview
Kadıköy is the vibrant cultural heart of Istanbul's Asian side, a bohemian neighborhood of independent shops, street food, vintage markets, and a legendary produce market. The ferry ride across the Bosphorus is half the attraction.
Highlights
- Kadıköy Market: A sprawling food market with cheese, olives, fish, and prepared foods.
- Moda Waterfront: A breezy coastal promenade with views back to the European skyline.
- Indie Culture: Record shops, vintage clothing, independent bookstores, and coffee roasters.
History
Kadıköy stands on the site of ancient Chalcedon, founded in 685 BC — predating Constantinople by over 1,000 years. The Oracle of Delphi called Chalcedon's founders 'blind' for not choosing the superior site across the strait.
