Overview
A gondola ride is Venice's quintessential experience — gliding through narrow canals and under ancient bridges in a handcrafted flat-bottomed boat steered by a single oar. Over 400 licensed gondoliers operate in Venice today.
Highlights
- Grand Canal Route: Some routes traverse the Grand Canal, passing Renaissance and Gothic palazzi.
- Quiet Back Canals: Routes through the smaller rii (canals) offer intimate glimpses of hidden Venice.
- Traghetto Alternative: For a budget taste, ride the traghetto (gondola ferry) across the Grand Canal for €2.
History
Gondolas have been Venice's primary transport for over 1,000 years. At their peak in the 18th century, 10,000 plied the canals. Today about 430 remain, each handcrafted from 280 pieces of 8 different woods.
