Overview
The Fondaco dei Tedeschi is a 16th-century former trading post for German merchants, now a luxury department store (DFS T Galleria). Its star attraction is a free rooftop terrace with stunning 360-degree views over the Rialto Bridge and the Grand Canal.
Highlights
- Rooftop Terrace: The must-visit panoramic terrace (free, reservation required) offers one of Venice's best viewpoints.
- Central Courtyard: A beautifully renovated atrium with escalators designed by OMA/Rem Koolhaas.
- Frescoes: Remnants of original Giorgione and Titian frescoes on the exterior (fragments now in Ca' d'Oro).
History
Originally built in 1228 as a combined warehouse and lodging for German and Austrian traders, it was rebuilt after a fire in 1505. The Benetton Group acquired it in 2008 and completed a controversial restoration as a retail space.
