The National Garden is a lush 15.5-hectare oasis behind the Parliament building, a romantic tangle of shaded paths, ancient ruins, a small zoo, and botanical gardens — the green lung of central Athens.
Created in 1839 by Queen Amalia, who personally supervised the planting of 15,000 plants and trees from around the world. It was originally the Royal Garden, opened to the public in 1923.
