Overview
Deichman Bjørvika is Oslo's spectacular new main public library, a six-story angular building offering free workspace, gaming rooms, a cinema, recording studios, and panoramic fjord views.
Highlights
- Architecture: Designed by Lund Hagem and Atelier Oslo, the building leans dramatically over the plaza with cantilevered upper floors.
- Top Floor: A reading room with floor-to-ceiling windows offering sweeping views of the Oslofjord and Opera House.
- Free Facilities: Recording studios, 3D printers, sewing machines, gaming consoles, and cinema—all free to use.
History
Opened in June 2020, it replaced the old Deichman library that had served Oslo since 1785. Named after Carl Deichman, who donated his book collection to the city in 1780.
