Overview
Peter Eisenman's Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is a haunting 19,000 m² field of 2,711 concrete stelae of varying heights near the Brandenburg Gate. An underground information center documents the Holocaust with personal stories.
Highlights
- Stele field: The undulating grid creates a disorienting, immersive experience — no prescribed path.
- Information Center: Below-ground exhibition with four themed rooms tracing individual Jewish fates.
- Room of Names: Audio readings of names and brief biographies of Holocaust victims — a 6-year, 7-month continuous loop.
History
Designed by Peter Eisenman and inaugurated on 10 May 2005 — sixty years after VE Day. The memorial's abstract form was deliberate: Eisenman rejected figurative representation.
