Overview
The Faro de Moncloa is a 92-metre-high latticed steel observation tower in the university district, providing the highest publicly accessible panoramic viewpoint in Madrid.
Highlights
- 360° Views: On clear days, the tower offers views extending to the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range 50 kilometres to the north.
- Architecture: The futuristic 1992 telecommunications tower features a distinctive disc-shaped observation deck at its summit.
- Speed: A high-speed elevator whisks visitors to the top in just 26 seconds.
History
Designed by architect Salvador Pérez Arroyo and built for the 1992 celebrations marking Madrid as the European Capital of Culture. After years of closure for safety renovations, it reopened in 2022 with improved accessibility and a new glass floor section.
Visitor Tips
- Clear Days: Check visibility before visiting; haze can significantly reduce the view. Winter mornings often offer the clearest conditions.
- Combine: The surrounding Ciudad Universitaria campus has excellent examples of 1920s Spanish rationalist architecture.
- Duration: 15–20 minutes.
