Overview
Portobello Beach is Edinburgh's seaside neighborhood, a 3-kilometre stretch of golden sand on the Firth of Forth, about 5 km east of the city centre. It is a genuine, working-class beach town with independent character.
Highlights
- The Beach: A broad sandy beach backed by a Victorian promenade, popular for swimming, paddleboarding, and walking year-round — yes, even in winter.
- The Promenade: A wide, flat walkway perfect for cycling, running, or simply strolling with views across the Firth to Fife.
- The Turkish Baths: Portobello Swim Centre includes beautifully restored Victorian Turkish baths, offering a unique bathing experience.
History
Portobello developed as a seaside resort in the Georgian and Victorian eras, becoming Edinburgh's answer to Brighton. Named by a retired sailor after the Battle of Portobello (1739) in Panama, the neighbourhood retains much of its Victorian beach-town character.
