Overview
Kastellet is one of the best-preserved star fortresses in Northern Europe. Today, its earthworks, moats, and iconic red-painted barracks serve dual purposes: an active military site and a tranquil, scenic public park.
Highlights
- The Windmill: A beautifully preserved 1847 Dutch-style windmill sitting atop the grassy ramparts.
- The Commander's House: The striking yellow building originally built for the head of the fortress.
- The Ramparts: A grassy, elevated walking path that perfectly outlines the five-pointed star shape of the citadel.
History
Founded by King Christian IV in 1626 to guard the harbor entrance against naval attacks, Kastellet was later completed in its current star shape by a Dutch engineer. It played a major defensive role during the British bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807.
Visitor Tips
- The Walk: Walking the complete perimeter of the ramparts takes about 45 minutes and offers great views of the harbor and the nearby Little Mermaid.
- Respect: Because it is still an active military barracks, visitors must stay out of restricted zones and respect the guards.
- Duration: 1 hour.
