The Gefion Fountain is a spectacular, large-scale monument located near Kastellet and the waterfront. Depicting a mythological scene dramatically carved in stone, it is widely considered Copenhagen's most beautiful and dramatic fountain.
Funded by the Carlsberg Foundation to mark the brewery's 50th anniversary, it was designed by Danish sculptor Anders Bundgaard. The fountain depicts the legend of the creation of Zealand (the island Copenhagen sits on), where the goddess Gefjon turned her four sons into oxen to plow the land out of Sweden.
