Overview
The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is an aircraft carrier turned floating museum docked at Pier 86 on the Hudson River, displaying historic aircraft, a Cold War submarine, and the Space Shuttle Enterprise.
Highlights
- Flight Deck: The aircraft carrier's massive flight deck displays over 25 restored aircraft including an A-12 Blackbird, the fastest spy plane ever built.
- Space Shuttle Enterprise: NASA's original prototype space shuttle, housed in its own pavilion, is awe-inspiringly large up close.
- USS Growler: Tour the cramped interior of a Cold War-era guided missile submarine moored alongside the carrier.
History
USS Intrepid (CV-11) was commissioned in 1943, survived five kamikaze attacks and a torpedo strike in WWII, served in the Cold War and Vietnam, and recovered astronauts from NASA missions. It became a museum in 1982.
