Overview
The Chrysler Building is widely considered the most beautiful skyscraper ever built. Its gleaming stainless-steel Art Deco crown, eagle gargoyles, and sunburst spire make it the most beloved building on the Manhattan skyline.
Highlights
- The Crown: Seven radiating stainless steel arches with triangular windows, visible from miles away and illuminated brilliantly at night.
- Eagle Gargoyles: Eight enormous stainless steel eagles projecting from the 61st floor corners, modeled after the Chrysler automobile hood ornaments of the era.
- The Lobby: A stunning Art Deco masterpiece of red African marble, chrome, and a massive ceiling mural depicting the age of transportation.
History
Completed in 1930, it was briefly the world's tallest building for 11 months before being surpassed by the Empire State Building. Designed by William Van Alen for automotive magnate Walter Chrysler, the secret spire was assembled inside the building and raised through the roof in 90 minutes.
