Overview
Roppongi is Tokyo's cosmopolitan nightlife and art district, home to two major museum complexes, upscale dining, and a legendary club scene that draws both expats and locals.
Highlights
- Roppongi Hills & Mori Art Museum: A colossal mixed-use complex anchored by a world-class contemporary art museum at the top of the 54-story tower.
- Tokyo Midtown: A sleek rival complex featuring 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, the Suntory Museum, plus beautiful gardens and premium shopping.
- Nightlife: The district's bars and clubs are among the few in Tokyo that stay open until dawn.
History
Historically a military district, Roppongi became associated with nightlife after WWII when American military bases attracted entertainment venues. The opening of Roppongi Hills in 2003 repositioned the area as a cultural destination.
