Overview
The Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum is a sprawling outdoor museum in Koganei Park preserving 30 historic buildings relocated from across Tokyo, spanning from the Edo period to the early Showa era.
Highlights
- Merchant Houses: Beautifully reconstructed Edo-period shops and bathhouses showing daily life in old Tokyo, complete with period furnishings.
- Western-Style Houses: Elegant Meiji and Taisho-era Western-influenced residences showing Japan's rapid modernization.
- Shitamachi Alley: A recreated downtown commercial street inspired the spirit town in Miyazaki's Spirited Away.
History
Opened in 1993 to preserve buildings that would otherwise be lost to Tokyo's relentless urban redevelopment. Each building was carefully dismantled, transported, and reassembled on the museum grounds.
