Museums in Kuala Lumpur

Muzium Negara is Malaysia's principal museum, styled after a traditional Malay palace with a sweeping gable roof. Its four main galleries trace the nation's story from prehistoric origins through the Malay sultanates to colonial rule and independence.

The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia is Southeast Asia's largest museum of Islamic art, housing over 7,000 artefacts across 12 permanent galleries. The building itself, with its turquoise-domed architecture, sits within the Lake Gardens precinct.

The Royal Museum (Muzium DiRaja) occupies the former Istana Negara, a colonial-era mansion that served as the King's residence from 1957 to 2011. Its four galleries display the throne room, royal regalia, state gifts, and ceremonial robes.

Petrosains is an interactive science discovery centre on Level 4 of the Petronas Twin Towers' Suria KLCC mall. Operated by Petronas, it covers petroleum science, geology, space, and sustainability through over 300 hands-on exhibits.

Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman is a traditional Malay wooden house relocated from Kedah to the grounds of the Heritage Centre of Malaysia (Badan Warisan Malaysia) in central KL. Guided tours explain Malay domestic architecture, social customs, and craft traditions.

The National Textile Museum (Muzium Tekstil Negara) is housed in a striking Indo-Saracenic colonial building near Merdeka Square. Its four floors showcase Malaysia's rich textile heritage—from bark cloth and Iban ikat weaving to Malay songket and Peranakan beadwork.
