Museums in Colombo

The National Museum of Colombo is Sri Lanka's largest and most comprehensive museum, housed in an elegant Italian Renaissance–style building from 1877. Its collections span prehistoric artifacts to colonial-era memorabilia.

The Sri Lanka Railway Museum preserves the island's rich rail heritage, displaying vintage steam locomotives, carriages, and rail equipment. It is a compact museum near Colombo's southern suburbs.

The Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum, housed within the National Museum complex, celebrates the life and works of Martin Wickramasinghe (1890–1976), widely regarded as Sri Lanka's greatest Sinhala-language novelist and cultural commentator.

Number 11, 33rd Lane is the former Colombo residence of Geoffrey Bawa (1919–2003), Sri Lanka's most influential architect and the father of tropical modernism. Now a museum-house, guided tours reveal the inventive spatial sequences that defined his practice.

The Dutch Period Museum occupies a restored 17th-century Dutch colonial residence in Pettah, showcasing furniture, maps, coins, and artifacts from the 150-year Dutch occupation of coastal Ceylon (1640–1796).
