Viewpoints in Nara

Mount Wakakusa (Wakakusayama) is a 342-meter grassy hillside rising directly behind Nara Park. Its treeless slopes offer sweeping panoramic views over the city, the surrounding Yamato Plain, and on clear days, as far as Osaka. It is famous for the spectacular Yamayaki grass-burning festival each January.

Nigatsu-do (Second Month Hall) is a sub-temple of Todai-ji perched on the hillside east of the Great Buddha Hall. Its elevated balcony offers one of the finest free panoramic views in Nara, sweeping across the city rooftops to the western mountains.

Sarusawa Pond is a picturesque artificial pond at the base of Kofuku-ji's hill, famous for its mirror-like reflections of the temple's five-story pagoda. It has been one of Nara's most beloved scenic spots for over 1,200 years.
