At 375 hectares, the English Garden is larger than New York's Central Park and one of the world's largest urban parks. Laid out in 1789 by Sir Benjamin Thompson (Count Rumford), it stretches from the city centre nearly 6 km north to the Studentenstadt.

Built for the 1972 Summer Olympics, Munich's Olympiapark remains a vibrant recreational and events complex. Its revolutionary tent-like acrylic-glass roof by Frei Otto and Günter Behnisch defined a new era of architectural lightness and optimism.

The Hofgarten is a serene Renaissance garden just north of the Residenz, anchored by the octagonal Diana Temple (1615). Its grid of paths is lined with linden trees and flanked by arcades sheltering open-air art exhibitions.
